Music to Learn

As a team, I’d like us to learn these songs and listen to each part. We do not have to copy the songs exactly but being familiar with them will allow us more ease as we play on Tuesday nights. I couldn’t get all the songs but most of them can be found here. I’ll post the song and give some notes per instrument or singer so that way you can review what I envision and give feedback in briefings. I have a wonderful team full of talent so if you have an idea on how we can improve, let’s hear it!

The Songs

Wonderful Maker” by Matt Redman

Matt Redman. He just doesn’t give up and continues to write great stuff. This one is older but still nice. I’d like to do this song a bit more lively but essentially the same. Electric guitar: I love the swells. I’d love to see that incorporated into the song if possible. I think we do this song well so I’m moving on to the next one. Please leave comments if you have questions and , of course, cite the song.

Awaken Us” by Marcus Meier

This song is from the Immersed CD from the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. Some things to note that I’m looking for: the verse is quieter than the chorus. I’d like the chorus to be strong when we enter the first measure. Vocally, let’s sing in unison for the verses and harmony in the chorus. I love the harmony in this song. Since we have many singers, we can double up on harmonies in the chorus if it is male and female. The difference in the octave sounds nice. >

Restoration” by Clay Edwards

I know! I thought David Brymer wrote this song. I guess I’ll have to change my music to reflect the discovery. This song, made famous at onething, is awesome.

The Highest and the Greatest” by Tim Hughes

Tim Hughes always writes great songs from the contemplative to the proclamatory, anthemic pieces. This 3/4 time (or maybe it is 6/8) has a definite waltz but some great moments here. The drums use a triple beat to in emphasis of the time signature. I’d listen for that element and see what we can do to incorporate it. When we do this song in the prayer room, I’ll start with drums, bass and guitar launching into the chorus with the electric (for strength) and vocals. The bridge is the highest moment in this song and would be good to play it the loudest. The ending chorus “lifting you high…” is excellent to launch into spontaneous singing. Let’s build this like they do from small to large.

Daughters of Jerusalem” by David Brymer

Beautiful, reflective, awesome. I wish we had a keyboard player because the guitar doesn’t really give it the feel it deserves. This will be at the end of the set as we transition if the previous cycle is complete. I’ll play by guitar with one accompanied vocalist. As the transition occurs and the singer must transition out, I will be left with the new worship leader who will hopefully will be able to sing this with me in a harmony. You gotta love this song! : )

Real Love” by Luke Wood

This is a new favorite of mine that Luke Wood wrote and published on a recent IHOP Limited Edition album. I’m not sure if I’ll lead this as a team but it is good to have it here as a reference… just in case.

Music Template

Sometimes when you are laying out a song, you want all your songs to look the same. I had a mis-matched worship leader book for a period of time until I had enough. I designed a layout that I enjoy using and I’m offering it to anyone else who want to use it. It’s a .pdf form that you can enter the lyrics, chords, indicators, title and author information and maintain the formatting each time. Try it out if you like. Download

Messing Around

I’m posting these files to keep track of different music fragments that I have from time to time. This is a 1 – 5-6m-4 pattern that I’m messing with in the key of G. This version is the more mellow of the two.

This one is a bit more mellow and has a different chord structure. Check it out.
